10 Best Legal Business Intelligence Software of 2026

Last updated on by Editorial Staff
Legal Business Intelligence Software

Legal business intelligence answers a question about the firm, not about the case. Which practice groups actually make money once you account for write-offs. Which partners’ matters realize the rate on the engagement letter and which quietly discount it. How long cash sits in work in progress and unbilled receivables before it reaches the bank. None of that is found in case law.

That distinction matters because the two things are routinely confused, including on lists like this one. A legal research platform helps a lawyer win a matter. A legal BI platform tells the managing partner whether winning it was profitable. They are bought by different people, from different budgets, and they are not alternatives to each other.

This page covers ten products, and it is honest about the split: five are true law firm business intelligence tools and five are legal research platforms that are often listed under this heading but answer a different question. Each section says which it is, who owns it, and what it costs where a price is published. Checked against vendor sources in August 2026.

What is legal business intelligence software?

Legal business intelligence software sits on top of a firm’s practice management and time and billing system, usually Aderant Expert or Thomson Reuters Elite 3E, and turns the transactions in it into financial and operational reporting. It is the reporting layer, not the system of record, which is why almost every product below is sold by reference to the billing system it connects to.

The metrics it exists to produce. If a demo does not show you these, it is not a legal BI tool:

  • Realization rate – the share of recorded time that survives to a bill, and then to cash. Billing realization and collection realization are different numbers and both matter.
  • Utilization – billable hours recorded against a timekeeper’s target. The single most-watched number in most firms, and on its own the most misleading.
  • Matter profitability – revenue against the true cost of the timekeepers who did the work, which is the number that reveals whether a prestigious client is subsidised by everyone else.
  • Work in progress and lockup – unbilled time plus unpaid bills, and how many days of it the firm is carrying. This is the cash flow question partners actually feel.
  • Leverage – the ratio of associates to partners on the work, which drives margin more than the headline rate does.
  • Matter budgeting and budget against actual – increasingly demanded by clients under fixed fees and outside counsel guidelines.
  • Rate card and write-off analysis – where agreed rates and standard rates diverge, and who is discounting.

Two different products are listed under this heading

Roundups of “legal business intelligence” almost always mix two categories, and this one did too until it was revised. Both are useful, neither replaces the other, and confusing them wastes a procurement cycle. The table sorts all ten.

Two things fall out of that table that a flat list of ten hides. Westlaw and CoCounsel are the same company, so they are not independent options to weigh against each other. And Iridium BI reports on Aderant rather than competing with it, so a firm running Aderant Expert may well buy both. Details are in each section below.

legal business intelligence softwareLikes

It helps to automate the process of legal research and document production. That can save a lot of time and effort for lawyers and improve the accuracy of the research and documents.

It can help keep track of deadlines, court procedures, and other vital details. That information can be accessed quickly and easily, which can help avoid any potential problems or delays in proceedings.

legal business intelligence softwareDislikes

It needs experts to adequately set up and maintain the system, the possibility of user error when inputting data, and possible security risks associated with storing sensitive information on an online platform.

User opinion

LIT Dashboard is an excellent tool for law firms. It allows you to keep track of all the essential information related to cases. That helps you make better decisions and provides an efficient way to handle litigation.

2. Coyote Analytics

Coyote requires a lot of training and regular upkeep to function correctly. Additionally, if users do not input high-quality data, the software’s output will also be low-quality.

In addition, the software is very user-friendly and easy to navigate, offering many beneficial features for law firms.

3. Iridium BI (now BigHand Business Intelligence)

Iridium BI is purpose-built law firm business intelligence with role-based reporting, so a practice group head, a billing partner and the CFO each open a dashboard aimed at their own decisions. It ships as four modules: Revenue, GL and Expense, Profitability, and Matter Budgeting, which is about as direct a statement of what legal BI covers as any vendor makes.

Name and owner have both changed. Iridium Technology, founded in 2009, was acquired by BigHand, and the product is now sold as BigHand Business Intelligence, powered by Iridium. The standalone iridiumbi.com no longer resolves, which can look like a dead vendor and is not one: the product is alive under the BigHand name and existing clients were moved to a combined support team.

It is not an alternative to Aderant at number 4 below. Iridium reads from a firm’s practice management system and supports Aderant Expert, Elite 3E and Elite Enterprise. A firm running Aderant is a candidate to buy this on top of it, not instead of it. Check which version of your billing system is supported before anything else, because that compatibility, not the feature list, decides whether it can be implemented at all.

legal business intelligence softwareLikes

  • Reduced costs: By automating the process of managing and tracking legal cases, litigation services software can help law firms reduce their costs significantly.
  • Increased efficiency: The use of software can help lawyers manage their caseload more efficiently, leading to increased profitability for the firm.
  • Improved accuracy: Automated systems are often more accurate than manual systems, leading to fewer mistakes and less wasted time.

User opinion

Iridium BI is a law firm’s business intelligence software. It allows you to manage your caseloads and track billable hours more effectively.

The reporting features are also very helpful in getting a clear overview of your firm’s performance. We recommend this software to any law firm looking for a better way to manage its operations.

4. Aderant

Aderant is best understood as the system of record rather than the reporting layer. Its core product, Aderant Expert, is a practice management, time and billing platform used by many of the world’s largest firms, and its analytics sit on top of the data it already holds. That is a real advantage, because the numbers come from one source with no integration to maintain, and a real constraint, because you are reporting on Aderant from inside Aderant.

This is the entry that most often gets mis-shortlisted. If you already run Aderant Expert, the question is not “Aderant or Iridium” but whether Aderant’s own reporting is enough or whether you want a dedicated BI layer such as Iridium BI at number 3, which explicitly supports Aderant Expert. If you do not run Aderant, adopting it is a practice management replacement, which is a far larger project than buying a BI tool.

6. Westlaw (Thomson Reuters)

Category note. Westlaw is a legal research platform, not law firm business intelligence. It will not tell you your realization rate. It is included because it is routinely listed under this heading, and because knowing the difference is the most useful thing this page can tell you.

The “Edge” label is two generations out of date. Thomson Reuters’ research platform went WestlawNext in 2010, Westlaw Edge in 2018, Westlaw Precision in 2022 and Westlaw Advantage in 2025, and in August 2025 Thomson Reuters launched CoCounsel Legal as an integrated research and document review platform with agentic AI. If a quote or an old comparison still says Edge, you are looking at legacy packaging.

Westlaw remains a premier source for cases, regulations, secondary sources, briefs, trial court documents, public records and expert materials, with KeyCite for citation checking.

It offers cases, regulations, secondary sources, practice areas, news briefs, trial court documents, public records, expert materials, and more. It also features first-of-its-kind AI-powered tools like intelligent document analysis to enhance research ability.

7. Lexis+ (formerly Lexis Advance)

Category note. Another legal research platform rather than firm business intelligence, and the product name has been retired. LexisNexis retired the “Advance” brand in 2020: the US platform became Lexis and the premium tier Lexis+. Canada followed in September 2022 and Australia in January 2024. Ask for Lexis+ by name.

LexisNexis, part of RELX, gives access to more than 60,000 sources of legal, news, business and public records information, with Shepard’s Citations Service for verifying that authority is still good law. Its AI tier is sold as Lexis+ AI.

In addition, it aids you in taking up legal matters and transactions with confidence by giving access to more than 60,000 sources of legal, news, business, and public records information to develop a solid strategy and verify good law with Shepard’s Citations Service.

Lexis Advance is a type of legal research software, a part of the comprehensive collection of tools for attorneys. This legal research platform offers a search tool that utilizes natural language or boolean searching to acquire data on various legal topics.

8. CoCounsel (formerly Casetext, now Thomson Reuters)

Same owner as number 6. Thomson Reuters acquired Casetext for $650m in cash, announced 26 June 2023 and completed 17 August 2023, and casetext.com now redirects to Thomson Reuters’ CoCounsel page. Westlaw and this entry are therefore the same company, not two independent options, which is worth knowing before you treat them as competing quotes.

Founded in 2013 and serving more than 10,000 law firms and legal departments at the time of the deal, Casetext built CoCounsel, an AI legal assistant that handles document review, research memos, deposition preparation and contract analysis. The CoCounsel name has since become Thomson Reuters’ umbrella brand for its AI assistant, extending well beyond the original Casetext product.

This is a powerful tech platform for effective, efficient legal research, document generation, and more. It boasts a comprehensive database with one-of-a-kind search capabilities.

It provides access to all the proceedings in all 50 states and US federal courts, statutes, regulations, and rules with no shortage of data sources. In addition, Casetext’s innovative neural net technology and parallel search enable users to search how attorneys think.

Casetext is a powerful, award-winning AI platform for smarter legal research and document drafting. It helps you conduct a quick search according to your thought process and obtain results from the common law or your firm’s documents.

In addition, the advanced parallel search allows users to retrieve lost keywords and search all about the law easily.

9. Bloomberg Law (Bloomberg Industry Group)

Bloomberg Law, from Bloomberg Industry Group, combines primary and secondary legal sources with the thing its competitors cannot easily match: real-time business and markets news, plus company and transactional data from the wider Bloomberg franchise. For transactional and corporate practices that is a genuine differentiator.

It does use the phrase “business intelligence”, and that is worth reading carefully. It means market and company intelligence about clients and deals, not analytics about your own firm’s realization and profitability. Useful for pitching and for knowing a counterparty. It is not the tool that tells you which practice group is losing money.

Bloomberg Law offers one comprehensive platform with a single, fixed price and complete access to its growing library of legal technology.

10. VitalLaw (formerly Cheetah, from Wolters Kluwer)

The Cheetah name is retired. Wolters Kluwer relaunched its legal research platform as VitalLaw, one word, and VitalLaw fully replaced Cheetah on 1 November 2021, expanding primary source content by more than 40 percent at the same time. Anything still branded Cheetah predates that.

VitalLaw serves law firms, general counsel offices and corporate legal departments, and it is strongest where Wolters Kluwer’s editorial franchises are strongest: tax, securities, banking, healthcare compliance and labor and employment. One practical consequence of the relaunch is that Wolters Kluwer titles are no longer licensed to Thomson Reuters, so content that used to be reachable through Westlaw is now only on VitalLaw. If your practice depends on a specific Wolters Kluwer treatise, that is the deciding fact.

Category note. Like numbers 6 to 9, this is a legal research platform rather than law firm business intelligence.

Conclusion

Start by deciding which question you are answering. If it is “how is the firm performing”, your shortlist is the first five: Iridium BI (now BigHand) and Aderant at the large firm end, Coyote Analytics and LIT Dashboard in the middle, and EZlytix where budgets are smaller. If it is “what does the law say”, you are shopping for research and the last five apply, where the real choice is usually driven by which publisher owns the content your practice depends on.

Three practical checks before you sign. Confirm the integration first, because a legal BI tool is only as good as its connection to your time and billing system, and Aderant Expert or Elite 3E support is a hard gate rather than a feature. Insist on matter-level profitability in the demo, using your own data, since utilization dashboards are easy and profitability is where these products separate. And check who owns what: Westlaw and CoCounsel are both Thomson Reuters, Lexis+ is LexisNexis under RELX, VitalLaw is Wolters Kluwer, and Iridium is BigHand. Two of those relationships are invisible from the product names alone.
