10 Best Transportation Management Software of 2026

Last updated on by Editorial Staff
Transportation Management Software

Transportation management software plans, books, tracks and pays for freight. It rates carriers against your contracts, picks a route and mode, tenders the load, tracks it, and reconciles the invoice against what was quoted, which is usually where it pays for itself.

The category is less uniform than a top ten list suggests. Some of these systems are built for a shipper moving pallets by LTL, some for a broker or 3PL reselling capacity, and some for ocean and international freight. Three of the ten changed hands or changed direction recently, so the comparison below leads with who owns each product today.

What is Transportation Management Software (TMS)?

It is a type of software that helps manage a company’s inbound and outbound orders and suggests automated routing modules for quick and timely delivery.

  • It sits between your ERP and your warehouse management system. The ERP holds the order, the warehouse picks and packs it, and the TMS decides how it moves and what that should cost.
  • It rates and routes each load against your contracted carrier rates, trading off cost, transit time and stop count against the service and quality requirements of the goods.
  • It tenders loads to carriers and tracks them, so shipment status lives in one place instead of across a dozen carrier portals and email threads.
  • It audits the freight invoice against the original quote, the accessorials and the fuel surcharge. This is where most TMS deployments actually find their savings.
  • It accumulates lane and carrier performance history, which is the leverage you take into the next rate negotiation.

Ownership and pricing disclosure checked against each vendor site in August 2026.

Two entries need a caveat. GoRamp now describes itself as a yard and dock orchestration platform rather than a transport planning system, so it solves a narrower problem than the rest of this list. Fleetable is built for the Indian market, which matters if you are shipping in North America or Europe.

What a TMS costs

Only MyCarrier publishes a price. Everyone else quotes, and searches for transportation management system cost are common enough that the silence is worth explaining rather than repeating. Four things drive the number:

  • How you are counted. Per user, per shipment, per load or a percentage of freight spend. A per shipment model looks cheap in a pilot and scales badly in peak season, so model it on your busiest month rather than your average one.
  • Carrier and EDI connections. Most vendors include a standard carrier library, then charge to build or maintain custom EDI and API links. This is the line that most often overruns.
  • Implementation and rate loading. Getting your contracted rates, accessorials and fuel tables into the system correctly is the real project. Budget for it separately from the subscription.
  • Freight audit and pay. Often a separate module or a separate provider entirely, and often billed as a share of recovered savings rather than a license fee.

For a small shipper booking LTL directly, the published MyCarrier tiers are a fair anchor for what entry level looks like: free for occasional use, $60 a month at the low end and $200 a month for a fuller feature set. Broker and 3PL platforms of the Infios, Descartes and Oracle type are a different category of spend, quoted against volume, and the implementation is usually the larger half of year one.

Conclusion

Start from what you actually move. If you are a shipper sending LTL direct to carriers, MyCarrier is the obvious first look because it is the only one here that will tell you the price before you talk to a salesperson. If you are a broker or 3PL reselling capacity across modes, the serious candidates are Infios and Descartes 3G TMS. If most of your freight crosses an ocean, GoComet is built for that and the domestic tools are not.

Whoever you shortlist, get the rate loading and carrier integration work quoted in writing alongside the subscription. Loading your contracted rates, accessorials and fuel tables correctly is the part of a TMS project that slips, and it is the part that decides whether the freight audit ever pays for the software.
